The Candidate

It’s the drink that propelled Obama to the White House! Well not exactly, but this cocktail will gather all parties together harmoniously around the table, just like its ingredients in the glass. Canton (a liqueur made from Chinese baby ginger) is a less abrasive alternative to fresh ginger, which can sometimes overwhelm a drink if not used properly.

Recipe information

  • Yield

    serves 2

Ingredients

4 ounces (1/2 cup) Scotch, such as Chivas Regal 12-year Scotch whiskey
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) ginger liqueur, such as Domaine de Canton
1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce (1 tablespoon) Simple Syrup (recipe follows)
Crystallized ginger wheels

Simple Syrup

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
(makes about 1 cup)

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Combine the Scotch, ginger liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a shaker with ice; shake it up really well to break the ice into shards. Strain the cocktail into 2 chilled martini glasses and garnish each with crystallized ginger.

  2. Simple Syrup

    Step 2

Combine the sugar and water in a pot over medium heat. Gently simmer for 2 minutes, swirling the pot now and then, until the sugar is dissolved and the liquid becomes clear. Do not allow the syrup to boil or get dark.

    Step 3

Cool completely and use to sweeten mixed drinks or iced tea. Keeps nearly indefinitely, refrigerated.
